Week 1: Week 1 – Intro & Colossians 1:1-2
Message #1 – This week includes primarily backrgound information on the letter, the city of Colossae, and the church in Colossae.
Week 2: Colossians 1:3-8
Message #2 – This week includes the beginning of Paul’s prayer for the church in Colossae in Chapter 1. We focus on the truth, power, and fruit of the gospel.
Week 3: Colossians 1:9-10
Message #3 – This week includes a discussion on the biblical process of discerning God’s will and the Five Traits of a Fully Devoted Follower. We also spend time casting vision for the launch of our 1:10 Community Groups.
Week 4: Colossians 1:11-14
Message #4 – This week we backtrack a bit into verses 9-10 as well as 11-14. We look at the four things Paul prays for the church in Colossae (v. 9-12) and how all of it is rooted in a right understanding of our Gospel Identity. (v. 12-14)
Week 5: Colossians 1:15a (w/ Genesis 3:26-27)
Message #5 – This week compare Colossians 1:15a (Jesus is the image of the invisible God) with Genesis 1:26-27 (where all mankind is created bearing the image of God).
Week 6: Colossians 1:15a (Part 2)
Message #6 – This week we finish where we left off last week with Jesus as the perfect image bearer, and how he perfectly images God and perfectly models who we were created to be.
Week 7: Colossians 1:15b-17
Message #7 – This week we look at verses 15b-17 and Paul’s clear statements on the deity of Jesus. His role in creation. His role in sustaining creation. And his role ruling over creation.
Week 8: Colossians 1:18a
Message #8 – This week we look at verse 18a, “And he [Jesus] is head of the body, the church.” It’s Ecclesiology 101 this week as we examine the nature and function of the church under the authority of Jesus.
Week 9: Colossians 1:18b
Message #9 – This week we look at the second half of verse 18 and how Jesus is First in everything. We derived the title for this series, “Jesus is First”, from this verse. Also included this week is an audio clip from the late S.M. Lockridge preaching on Jesus as the preeminent King.
Week 10: Colossians 1:19-23
Message #10 – This week we see the reconciling work of Jesus Christ on the cross in 1:19-23.
Week 11: Colossians 1:24-29
Message #11 – Paul is clear that his goal is to proclaim Jesus and present everyone fully mature on the last day. He has suffered, is suffering, and expects to suffer more for the sake of Christ, but it is all worth it because his focus is the last day.
Week 12: Colossians 2:1-7
Message #12 – Paul’s desire is for the people in Colossae to Learn Continually. We apply some Wawasee Bible vocabulary to Paul’s teaching in Colossians 2:1-7: A Fully Devoted Follower of Jesus Christ is to LEARN CONTINUALLY about Jesus, and LEARN CONTINUALLY to image Jesus.
Week 13: Philemon
Message #13 – Pastor Tim Cressman is our guest this week as he preaches from the book of Philemon. When Paul sent his letter to the church in Colossae, he included a personal letter for a man who lived in Colossae named Philemon. In the letter, Paul pleaded with Philemon to restore his relationship with Onesimus, demonstrating that Jesus is First. – If it’s true that Jesus is First, then it should have some bearing on how we live our lives! The simple truth of the preeminence of Christ should create some traction in every-day life. Philemon serves as a case-study: will the Gospel be enough to overcome ingrained social-structures and restore the broken relationships that could never normally be restored? Is Jesus really enough?
Week 14: Colossians 2:8-12
Message #14 – This week Paul encourages us to test everything according to Jesus and not be taken captive by empty, false teaching. This extends even to our understanding of who we are as believers and our identity in Jesus Christ. We are filled and made complete in Jesus
Week 15: EASTER: Colossians 2:13-15
Message #15 – On Easter Resurrection Sunday, we explore some facts concerning the resurrection, then dive into Colossians 2:13-15 where we see that the record of sin for which Jesus died was not his own, but ours. And by his death and resurrection, our record of sin can be set aside, cancelled, and forgiven as Jesus pays it in full!
Week 16: Colossians 2:16-23
Message #16 – This week we look at Paul’s exhortation to “hold fast to the Head”—to hold fast to Jesus—in light of the false teaching that was affecting the Colossian church. (FYI, our time was cut short this morning due to the “Seeking Things Above” presentation that preceded the message.)
Week 17: Colossians 3:1-11
Message #17 – In Chapter 3, Paul goes into practical application as he compares the change that ought to take place in the life of a believer with a change of clothes. Off with the old, on with the new. We look this week at killing sin, taking off the old self, by “fighting pleasure with pleasure” (the fleeting pleasure of sin vs. the eternal pleasure of Jesus).
Week 18: Colossians 3:12-17
Message #18 – This week we look at the other side of Paul’s exhortation to “Dress the Part” as a follower of Jesus. Not only should we put off and kill our sin, but we need to replace it with something, and put on the new self.
Week 19: Colossians 3:18-21
Message #19 – In this week’s study, Paul extends his teaching on living like Jesus to the home. We look at one of the powder keg issues of Scripture this week, studying biblical gender roles in the home. We explore what biblical submission is and is not, and what biblical headship is and is not as it relates to husbands and wives.
